Starting from January 1st all Holland trains are wind powered. Holland have a long history of harnessing wind power, from using wind for transportation agriculture. Now the Dutch became the first country to have all wind powered trains. Dutch electricity company named Eneco and railroad company NS teamed up two years ago. The goal was by 2018 all of trains would run by wind power, they have actually achieved the goal a year earlier.
These trains provide carbon free transportation for 600,000 passengers every day, that's 1,200,000 trains trips without carbon emissions. Holland requires 1,2000,000,000 kWh of wind energy per year to make this a these trains work through out the year, which is equivalent of providing energy to all the household in Amsterdam for a whole year.
Three rotations of a windmill allows a train to travel 1 km. One hour of a working windmill can power a train for 120 miles.
This is a big step for a sustainable future. Holland is a very green country and is one of the leaders is environmental protections.
